need? can't?

This morning I woke up to Madilyn calling out from her crib, "I need gum...I need pink gum!" First thing in the morning and she needs gum? She certainly doesn't understand there is a difference between needs and wants. All day long she tells me how she needs juice (if we have it in the house she won't drink anything else), needs to watch George, needs candy, needs beans for lunch (she loves refried beans), or needs her "sneaker shoes."
A related misunderstanding Madilyn has is knowing there is a difference between "can't" and "don't want to." When I tell her it's nap time, she tells me "I can't take a nap, I'm awake!" When I say she needs to eat a certain food, she let's me know she can't eat it. When it's time to get out of the tub, she can't be all done. She usually is pretty good about picking up her toys, but if the mood strikes her she'll tell me, "I can't clean up." I let her sit next to me on the counter top in the kitchen when I'm making meals, and when I needs to put her down she cries, "I can't get down!" Just now, as I'm finishing up this post, she had me put her snow hat on her. 2 minutes later she ripped it off, yelling, "I can't wear my pink hat!" At least she knows how to be assertive!

This post cracked me up. Ty says the same thing, especially with can't rather than want or don't want. So of course, we tried to teach him don't want instead of can't. Now he just yells stuff like "I can't want that!"

This is exactly like our Ty, too! Drives me insane when he says, I can't eat that! Or, Tonight our FHE lesson was on the Holy Ghost and I asked him to say Holy Ghost. He says, all whiny, "I can't say Holy Ghost!" oh brother.

I loved this! Ian is into saying "I need" for everything. I am trying to teach him the difference--that he "wants" it. Funny kids!
